What is the xKDF Federation?
The xKDFF is a federation of HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) groups who practice the Kunst des Fechtens (art of fighting) of Johannes Liechtenauer using a common approach and methodology. The approach taken by xKDF member organizations is a holistic blend of historical and modern practices that are combined with the intent to create a system that resembles, as closely as possible, the historical art during its heyday in the 14th and 15h centuries. The federation was established as a means of providing like minded organizations the opportunity to work together, learn from each other and compete against one another under a framework that supports their common training philosophy.
What is the Kunst des Fechtens?
The Kunst des Fechtens(KDF), which means "art of fighting," is a martial art that existed in and around the Holy Roman Empire, primarily in the 14th and 15th centuries. KDF is centered around the use of the longsword, which is the exemplar weapon of the tradition, and branches into other weapons (sword and buckler, messer, spear, pole axe, staff, dagger and more) as well as unarmed combat. It survives today in a collection of ancient treatises in both private collections and museums. The majority of known sources can be found online at the Wiktenauer.
